Kids

Kids aims for the standard of a service built for children. Anything a parent would not expect a child to see or share is blocked, including swearing, insults, flirtation and romantic or sexual roleplay, alcohol, gambling and personal details, even a child’s own. Content a child needs is still allowed: fantasy or cartoon violence such as game combat, stories whose characters commit crimes or trade insults, history lessons, asking for help with self-harm, drug prevention and lessons about prejudice.

The rules every built-in policy shares are listed in Built-in policies.

Sexual content

Everything sexual is blocked: sexual text, nudity of any kind, including non-erotic nudity, sexual activity, explicit sexual language, promotion of adult content, and suggestive content such as flirtation, innuendo or romantic or sexual roleplay. Revealing clothing alone is allowed, but it never excuses nudity, sexual activity or explicit language in the same image or text.

Violence

  • Fantasy or cartoon violence, such as game combat, is allowed.
  • Historical and educational violence, such as a history lesson, is allowed.
  • Realistic violence against people and real-world atrocities are blocked, even in fiction.
  • Graphic violence is blocked in every context.

Self-harm

Self-harm content wholly presented as seeking or offering support or prevention, such as a plea for help, is allowed so that a child can reach support. Self-harm methods and encouragement stay blocked.

Harassment and hate

  • Insults, bullying, threats and sexual harassment are blocked outside fiction, including contemptuous name-calling of a public figure or group and swearing at someone.
  • Mild mockery of a real person or group is blocked outside fiction, including a mocking nickname for a public figure and mild name-calling such as dummy. Affectionate teasing between friends or family is allowed.
  • Hate is allowed when it is wholly educational or countered, unless it contains an offensive identity slur. A quoted slur in a lesson is still blocked by the slur restriction and by Profanity. Stated hatred of a protected group, such as saying you hate them, is blocked like any other Hate.

Criminal activity

  • Crime in a story, factual reports of crime and non-graphic discussion of crime are allowed, such as a news story about fraud. Discussing violent crime is still blocked under Violence.
  • Alcohol, tobacco/vaping, gambling, sexual solicitation, grooming and child sexual abuse material are blocked in every context, including stories, reports and discussion.
  • Illegal-drug content is blocked in the same way, except that it is allowed when every instance of it is about prevention, recovery or harm reduction. Other drug content and the restrictions every policy shares remain blocked.

Personal information and profanity

  • Private details are blocked, including a child’s own.
  • Profanity is blocked, including quoted or educational language.

Link safety is in preview. Phishing and malware links are blocked, and so are links to adult and gambling sites. A link that can't be checked, such as a short link that can't be followed, is blocked too, because its destination is unknown. Where a link leads never changes a category's score.
