# Teen-safe

Teen-safe aims for a PG-13 standard for members of mixed ages from 13. Mild profanity is allowed; strong language and suggestive content are marked for reduced reach. It blocks insults aimed at a person, nudity and private details, limits insults aimed at public figures, allows non-graphic reports of real violence, and keeps self-harm reports out of view while allowing support. Alcohol, tobacco/vaping and gambling are allowed in reporting, discussion, support and stories. It is not a children’s policy.

The rules every built-in policy shares are listed in [Built-in policies](/docs/guides/built-in-policies#what-every-built-in-policy-shares).

## Sexual content

- **Nudity** is blocked, including non-erotic nudity, even in a report or support.
- **Sexual text and sexual activity**, including descriptions of nudity or sexual acts, are blocked outside reporting, support and non-graphic discussion.
- **Explicit sexual language**, such as graphic sexual descriptions, is blocked even in those contexts.
- **Suggestive content**, such as flirtation, innuendo or a sexual joke, is limited outside the allowed contexts above: delivered normally and marked for reduced reach, so your app can keep it out of recommendations. This does not excuse nudity, sexual acts or explicit sexual language in the same content.
- **Promotion of adult content** is blocked.
- **Offers or requests for sexual services or encounters** are blocked, including in contextual discussion.

## Violence

- **Graphic violence** is blocked in every context.
- **Reports of real violence** without graphic detail, such as news of an attack, are allowed.
- **Fictional, historical and educational violence** is allowed.

## Self-harm

- **Suicide and self-harm** are blocked, including someone describing their own thoughts or acts and reports of them, so members don’t come across them while browsing. Seeking or offering support, such as sharing a helpline, is allowed.
- **Self-harm methods and encouragement** are blocked in every context.

## Harassment and hate

- **Insults** aimed at a person, including swearing at someone, are blocked outside fiction, reporting or support.
- **Insults aimed at a public figure or at a group that is not a protected identity group**, such as a politician, a political party or a company, are limited: delivered normally and marked for reduced reach. Bullying, threats and sexual harassment of a public figure stay blocked.
- **Bullying, threats and sexual harassment** are blocked outside fiction, reporting or support, even when they are also teasing or aimed at a public figure.
- **Hate** is allowed when it is wholly reported, educational, presented for support or countered. There are no overriding Hate restrictions, so reported, educational or countered exclusion, dehumanization and threats are allowed when the context covers all of them. Stated hatred of a protected group, such as saying you hate them, is blocked like any other Hate.

## Criminal activity

- **Depicted or reported crimes**, such as a fight or a robbery, follow the Violence rules above rather than being blocked again under Criminal activity. Criminal instructions, promotion, plans and requests are blocked.
- **Alcohol, tobacco/vaping and gambling** are allowed in reporting, non-graphic discussion, support and stories, and limited otherwise: delivered normally and marked for reduced reach, so your app can keep them out of recommendations.
- **Illegal-drug content** is allowed in reporting, non-graphic discussion, support and stories, such as remarking on other people’s drug use or a news story about a drug bust, and blocked otherwise, including someone’s own account of using drugs. Recovery and prevention are support.
- **Sexual solicitation** is blocked, including in contextual discussion, reports and stories.
- **Grooming** is blocked, including in stories. Reports of grooming, warnings about it, support for those affected and non-graphic discussion are allowed.
- **Child sexual abuse material** is blocked, including a bare mention.

## Personal information and profanity

- **Private details** are blocked, including people’s own.
- **Mild profanity** is allowed. **Strong profanity and offensive slurs**, including recognisable obfuscated forms, are limited for reduced reach. Targeted insults, identity attacks and sexual harassment still follow their own rules.

## Links

[Link safety](/docs/guides/link-safety) is in preview. Phishing and malware links are blocked, and so are links to adult and gambling sites. Short links that can't be followed are allowed. Where a link leads never changes a category's score.
